About Afghan Hounds
Afghan Hounds were thought to have originated in Egypt, then
taken to Afghanistan by Phoenician traders where they are highly prized by the Afghani
tribesmen for their prowess in hunting game and guarding flocks.
Their long coats protect them from the extremes of the
Afghanistan temperatures and their thick pads and the hair on their feet protect them from
the harsh terrain.
Afghans have a loping gait that is reminiscent of the cheetah
and which takes them effortlessly for miles. They are capable of putting on a burst of
speed to close on prey they are chasing down. Their excellent eyesight enables them to see
their quarry at a great distance; often before the quarry has a chance to see the Afghan.
The Afghan Hound is aloof and reserved towards strangers, but is
quite affectionate and loving to his people. This is not a breed for everyone. While
shedding is minimal, the coat requires daily brushing and the dog requires daily exercise
to stay fit and happy. |
